Hurley uses QR code in magazine ads

While browsing an old copy of Surfer Magazine the other day and came across an exceptional QR code ad campaign that Hurley created for their Phantom board shorts. This campaign was worth posting about because they followed some of the basic principles of marketing with QR codes in magazine ads that many other advertisers are failing to remember.

First, the QR code when scanned, when to a mobile landing page. The most basic principle of QR code marketing is to send users to a mobile formatted landing page, it is a horrible user experience when you end up on a desktop site after scanning a QR code. Next, the landing page had a strong follow-through call to action. Users could either purchase online, find a store near them to purchase, or connect with Hurly on Facebook. Other brands have made the mistake of sending their scanners to an excellent web video, but then failed to continue the user experience to a logical end.

If you are planning to leverage QR codes in your magazine ads, scan the QR code below to see a great example of how it should be executed.

Kudos Hurley, job well done.
